TABLE CLOTH SHOOWA_1

These vintage textiles from DR Congo were created by men and women of the Kuba culture. Men weave the base cloth from palm leaf fibers and once the fabric comes off the loom, the women take over and embroider the fabric with dazzling geometric patterns. The cloths are worn or displayed on ceremonial occasions as a symbol of prestige, wealth, and status. Sometimes they were also used as currency. The cloths are highly admired for their complex geometric patterns and beautiful embroidery. Modern artists including Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Gustav Klimt were inspired by African Art and by Kuba textiles in particular.
